Something like a good armchair.

From Notes of a Painter, 1908.

"What I dream of is an art of balance, of purity and serenity, devoid of troubling or depressing subject matter, an art which could be for every mental worker, for the businessman as well as the man of letters, for example, a soothing, calming influence on the mind, something like a good armchair which provides relaxation from physical fatigue." - Henri Matisse.

And that is why he's my favourite.

Really? I find that Matisse's lack of pretention, in daring to admit that the greatest joy in art is its simple visual pleasure, which can be taken for face value if the viewer were so pleased, rather than feigning some mysterious "deeper meaning" which only elitist art academics can decipher and truly "understand", thereby ostracising the general public because of their "ignorance" towards the finer intricacies of art... I find that inspiring and brave. I can imagine all the art critics at the time shooting him down and condemning him for not being a "serious artist" for saying that.
